Yes, in our opinion, it is. When we first arrived in Lapland for holiday we fell in love with Levi immediately. After just one day, we had decided to move here permanently. Since that day we have visited many destinations in Lapland and we often say that if our first Lapland holiday would have been to any other place we would never have thought to move to Lapland. We feel that Levi has a soul, there is a balance here between the wild and the infrastructure that most international tourists want on their holiday.
This is the village centre but there are lots of accommodation, activity providers and businesses hidden amongst the trees around the fell. For instance, Foxfires is located on the quiet southern side of Levi fell.
Levi or Sirkka, is it the same place?
Levi is a very charming ski resort located in the village of Sirkka (commonly known as Levi), only 15 minutes’ drive from Kittilä International airport. Levi is actually the name of the hill that confidently drives up out of the forest. The ski resort’s flood lit slopes light it up in winter like a giant Christmas tree. From the top you feel that you can see for a million kilometres. From up there you hardly make out any human impact on the Lapland terrain and you really do feel like you are in one of the world’s great wildernesses. So while the village and our postal addresses say Sirkka, everyone, even Finns call this place Levi. Pronounced “Le” (as in Lettuce) “vi” (as in vino).
Levi has a small village centre with alpine style buildings, many restaurants, cafes and shops. Around the village centre there are a few well marked walking trails that you can walk to and be in the middle of the forest. The village is surrounded by the wild so only a few minutes’ drive away from the centre you are already in the middle of the wilderness or by a lake.
